English had served as a leader of the program since the launch of the Arts & Sciences Strategic Plan in 2022.
Tammy English is stepping back as co-director of the Transdisciplinary Institute in Applied Data Sciences (TRIADS).
An initiative of the Arts & Sciences Strategic Plan, TRIADS supports research that leverages data science tools to better understand pressing societal issues. English, a professor of psychological and brain sciences, has served as TRIADS co-director since its launch in 2022, serving initially alongside Jacob Montgomery and more recently with Bo Li.
Li, the Stanley A. Sawyer Professor of Statistics & Data Science, will now serve as TRIADS’ sole director.
“Tammy has made tremendous contributions to TRIADS, and I am deeply grateful for her leadership, vision, and dedication,” Li said. “She played an important role in building TRIADS, strengthening its role in data science education, and fostering a vibrant research community across WashU and beyond.”

By energizing novel, problem-focused research, the TRIADS initiative has become a catalyst for scientific discoveries that meaningfully improve the lives of individuals in St. Louis and beyond."
TRIADS’ projects have included seed grant funding for 18 new WashU research teams, educational programming on how to use data science tools, and a speaker series that brought numerous scholars to WashU to discuss the rise of artificial intelligence, the integrity of democratic elections, and how data science can improve public health.
Li will lead the way as TRIADS begins its next chapter, which continues to focus on transdisciplinary collaboration.
“TRIADS is well positioned to bring together researchers across disciplines, foster new collaborations, and support innovative research,” Li said. “We look forward to building on the strong foundation and continuing to expand TRIADS’ impact across WashU and beyond.”
